time for food

July 27, 2007

I never dreamed that I would be illustrating food on a monthly basis, but it is something I have grown to love.  It all started when I was struggling to come up with a creative way to present my work, and “get my foot in the door” with various publishers.  One late evening spent with a dear friend and fellow artist, Dana Jo Cooley, led to the idea of a “Southern Girl’s Cookbook”….(mind you, I couldn’t cook then…and still can’t cook).  I turned to my grandmothers’ recipes and after several months, and several people telling me I was wasting my time…the Cookbook was ready to send out.  Within a week, Skirt! Magazine called, and thus began the “Taste of the Month.”  I won’t lie, it can be a real challenge making the foods we eat look aesthetically pleasing, so I created this little sketchbook you see below.  Covered with a vintage napkin, found at an estate sale, this sweet little pattern inspires me to open the book and get sketching.
