Back to Blackbeard

May 18, 2009

Granny and I try to take a trip to beautiful Blackbeard Island at least once a year.  We managed to secure the only sunny day  we’ve seen in weeks, and spent 7.5 hours on the boat, crawling (and I do mean this literally, the tide was against us both ways) down the Julienton and across the Sapelo Sound.

It’s a great way to clear ones head and get inspired and believe me, this trip could not have come at a better time.  There is something so grounding about seeing undeveloped land, places spared for wildlife, and a reminder that things don’t always move so fast.

No street signs, just landmarks, like “Three Clumps of Trees” to find your way.

Mossy driftwood along the banks intermingled with fresh new growth.

We’ve docked here before and explored the lush grounds, but “the snakes are movin’ ” as Granny says, and well, I just can’t handle snakes.

We did, however, wander all the way up the creek that separates Blackbeard from Sapelo Island, to a magnificent white sand beach.  (See this photo from a previous trip)  We spent a good hour or so of our day collecting sand dollars (long since dead and bleached from the sun), conch and clam shells before heading back across the sound…bliss I tell you, sweet bliss.
