custom pug portrait painting in acrylic and oil wash

8×10 inches – acrylic & oil wash on patterned paper

Really beginning to think I am destined to own a pug (rescue) one day…I mean, look what happened after The Year of the French Bulldog?

*note* the current deadline for Holiday Pet Portrait Commissions is December 5th.  (subject to change if my schedule books up)  email heather@flyoungstudio.com or visit Vayda’s Pet Shop to get started.

Merry Christmas!

Our Christmas present (Thomas Jay) is all tuckered out…
and so is his big sister…

My observation:  it’s really just fruitcake with extra nuts.

Granny's Holiday Nut Cake

but don’t tell my fruitcake hatin’ Granny this…she claims they are culinary worlds apart (and she made the nut cake)

A striking resemblance to the ugliest painting I’ve ever painted, no?

I LOVE Wrapping Presents

December 22, 2010

…perhaps my favorite of all the Christmas traditions.

presents wrapped with pinwheel bows

I’m a sucker for paper rosettes and love any excuse to glue rhinestones and wayward buttons to things.

It’s a rather organic process, though I do like to keep a theme.    This year, I went for silver and gold with icy blue and the occasional pop of red.  I pulled every scrap bin out of my studio, and just started building from what I had on hand… (I always save lil remnants of ribbon!)… an eclectic mix of luxurious Italian handmade papers, basic kraft, and even a roll I found at the dollar store…(you’d be surprised at the paper you can find at the dollar store, just be aware that it’s usually thin and a little harder to work with)…now if I just had a tree to put them under…

Custom Art for Christmas

October 18, 2010

If you’ve been pondering that portrait of Fido or a sketch of your childhood home, now is the time to get on the list.  My schedule fills fast this time of year, and I’ve got some serious holiday travel lined up.  Only 68 days left until Christmas! Eeeeeek!

No house is too big or too small and I’m a sucker for just about any furry baby!  All I need are some awesome photos to work from, and a little bit of time.  I can also make archival prints of the original work  so that other friends and family members can have a little memento too!

Most importantly, I want to remind you all to consider buying handmade this year and supporting your local art community.  Aside from bringing home the most unique gifts, you’ll also be keeping people like myself from having to get a “real” job…(I hear there’s not many of those anyway)…so keep it quirky, and  buy handmade!

Email heather@flyoungstudio.com or click on my shopping links to the right to get started.  Hugs~

Last year he got this one…(the original, of course)…this year a little something to remind him of his 3 months in Central America.

Holiday Recap

January 2, 2010

Hey everybody!  We’re back from the “North Pole.” While we enjoyed our white Christmas,  it’s good to be back in the warm South…(even if we did bring a few sneezes and sniffles home with us)

Nick’s home in the summer vs. Nick’s home in the winter…

and no, I did not shovel one bit of that snow, nor did I make a snow angel…

but I did take a chilly walk through the forest preserve to capture some snowy pics.

I’m thinking a new painting or two is in order…in fact, that is part of my New Year’s Resolution…find more time to paint for me.

Hope you all had a lovely Holiday Season with friends and loved ones…tomorrow I start posting all the fabulous Christmas commissions I’ve kept under wraps for so long…so be sure to stop by…and a very Happy New Year to you all!

hugs ~ h

Merry (almost) Christmas!

December 19, 2009

Nick and I are closing shop and enjoying time with friends and family!  We’ll be back soon with a bevy of goodness to share…and after all the presents are opened and surprises unveiled, a ton of new work to post to this poor idle blog.  Wishing you all a warm and wonderful Holiday Season, and of course, thanks to all of you who have allowed us to have such a great year!

Schedule Booking Fast!

December 2, 2009

Thanks to all of you who took advantage of my weekend sales.  Would you believe it?  It’s only Dec. 2nd and I can no longer accept Pet Portrait commissions!  If I’ve just broken your heart, no worries!  I can still issue you a super cute gift certificate, good for one year, from Vayda’s Pet Shop.

I still have time to squeeze in a few custom Pen & Inks, but better book quick!

Of course, I have plenty of reasonably priced prints for the Foodie on your list…and a full line of Savannah Prints and Notes…(a good thing to have on hand for that unexpected neighbor that drops by with a surprise gift)

Hope y’all are having the best Holiday Season ever!  Oh and please remember to support your local artists and the hand-made movement.  xo
