There’s just something about this house in Rhode Island that speaks to me.  I’ve never been there and it probably has something to do with the fact that it seems so isolated, perched over the beach.    It’s a family home that opened its doors to a wedding in the back yard (talk about a backdrop) and I was lucky enough to draw it as a wedding gift for the bride & groom.

Atlanta House Portrait

October 6, 2012

I absolutely LOVED drawing this house, so much charm!  While I’ve never met the owner in person, she’s been such a gem to work with, I feel like I’ve known her for years.

It’s almost therapeutic to draw all the little details in Savannah ironwork.  I really enjoyed pulling this one together.

I love it when a customer commissions a custom pen and ink drawing and gives me a little back-story, history, or memory about the property.  The slatted windows, the barn built by hand out back, the crooked little sidewalk…this house was loved.

so much so, that they couldn’t decide between black and white and color, so I made a hand-watercolored print in addition to the original sketch…

Ahhhh…red doors!  I ADORE red doors!!!  (though I doubt if my homeowners association would approve)

If you’d  like to commission a drawing of your old family home, (and with the Holidays approaching, now is an excellent time), remember that I can make inexpensive archival-quality prints of Grandma’s house for the whole family….large or small, hand-watercolored or black and white, lots of options to choose from!

Congrats to the Happy Couple!  The Bride commissioned a custom pen & ink drawing of her parents’ home as a wedding gift for them, and it was a pure pleasure to draw!

Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

I love drawing historic properties, and this Federal Style home on Lincoln Street is no exception.  Built in 1799 for William Barnard, it must have a million stories to tell.   In 1812, the house became the first Methodist parsonage in Savannah.  It also served as a Presbyterian manse as recently as the 1970’s.

I’m a little sad that the iron gate designed by Ivan Bailey didn’t make the drawing…

My next two custom pen & inks have me giddy!  One, late eighteenth century, the other I’m not quite sure of, but equally as grand.

Inspiration

March 8, 2011

I recently spent some time out at my childhood home.   My great-aunt’s property, it has housed nearly every one of my mother’s siblings at some point or another.   I spent the first 8 years of my life in that house and nearly ever summer there after.

Perhaps this wallpaper mural in the foyer (circa 1978) has something to do with my Live Oak fascination?

The camellias in bloom and the morning fog off the Vernon River welcomed me home.

Enchanting, no?

I love this time of year!  I get to work in all my favorite mediums, reconnect with old clients, and meet lots of new ones.  Very content with the way this house turned out, and happy I can show it to you since the gift has already been given…

Custom Art for Christmas

October 18, 2010

If you’ve been pondering that portrait of Fido or a sketch of your childhood home, now is the time to get on the list.  My schedule fills fast this time of year, and I’ve got some serious holiday travel lined up.  Only 68 days left until Christmas! Eeeeeek!

No house is too big or too small and I’m a sucker for just about any furry baby!  All I need are some awesome photos to work from, and a little bit of time.  I can also make archival prints of the original work  so that other friends and family members can have a little memento too!

Most importantly, I want to remind you all to consider buying handmade this year and supporting your local art community.  Aside from bringing home the most unique gifts, you’ll also be keeping people like myself from having to get a “real” job…(I hear there’s not many of those anyway)…so keep it quirky, and  buy handmade!
