Tasked with cleaning out from under the bed today, I happened upon a relic from my past.  I had to pause for a moment when I saw the date….

SCAD Rising Star Certificate of Comletion Heather L. Young

strange, no?

Rising Star Program Savannah College of Art and Design

The summer of 1998 was probably one of the best summers of my life.  I was in between my junior and senior years of high school (dating myself here, I know) I had been accepted into the Rising Star Program at SCAD, and had managed to earn 2 scholarships to help afford it.  I had my first real taste of college life, the career I had chosen, and the freedom of living on my own that summer.

I remember the feeling I had on this 14th day, 14 years later.  I felt driven, inspired, and excited for the possibilities of the future…and a little sad I that I would have to return for one more year of high school before coming back to SCAD.

my new favorite t-shirt

June 25, 2010

Designed by a dear friend, and probably one of the most talented artists Nick and I have ever met.  Jason Jones (or Bob to us) was the first friend we made at SCAD. We were both illustration majors, with completely different styles, but a mutual respect for each others’ work.  He’s working as a tattoo artist in Springfield, MO these days, and when I saw this t-shirt, it had to be mine…I’m a sucker for birds anyway…

ps…sorry for the lack of posts here…I’ve been a busy bee in the studio…lots to share, but time escapes me!

Proof…

April 20, 2010

…I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life in the 10th grade.

note to self - goals

From the back of an old sketchbook…long-lost and forgotten at Granny J’s house.  Judging my the wonky “Y” in my last name, I had yet to nail down my signature.

Community

March 8, 2010

During my four years at SCAD, I had the opportunity to work first hand with some of the most talented, passionate, and fearless artists on the planet.  It was such a blessing to have that community of artists to bounce ideas off of.  Upon graduation, we dispersed and crawled into our own creative holes.  This was before the time that everyone had a blog or twitter or facebook fan page, and for many of us, it was a tough transition.  Which brings me to today’s post.

There’s a new community out there, a constant source of creative thought and inspiration, that’s carrying us all through a tough economic time.  I’ve “met” some fabulous artists via a blog comment or a tweet, and there is nothing better than waking up on a Monday morning to have your work featured on another artist’s blog…(thank you Elizaveta and Pet Boutique, you made my day this morning) And even though the world-wide web can be a little saturated, it doesn’t take away that sense of community and fellowship that can be had with people of similar interest and perspective.  We are so lucky to be living in this time!

Hope you all have a lovely Monday and thanks to all of you who have found my little corner of the web, and supported it!  You mean the world to me!

booked!

February 27, 2009

I am one lucky bride-to-be!  Mom and I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Jade McCully yesterday.  I won’t lie, I have been drooling over her wedding photography for months now.  Aside from being a fellow SCAD grad, she has a modern and creative take on wedding photos…an “artist’s artist” if you will…She is a true gem and the kind of person I would allow total creative freedom to without so much as a drop of worry.  She feels like an old friend, and I’m sure her personality will make my introverted groom a little more comfortable on one of the most nerve-wracking days of his life.  Anyhoo…here’s a sampling of her work…but do check out her website, www.jademccullyphotography.com.

swirls in my paint cup

November 3, 2008

Aren’t they beautiful?!  I’ve had this paint cup since my days as a Rising Star…in fact I think it came from O-House cafeteria…just a little nostalgia for your Monday…

Anyway, I’m off to paint those doors some more.  Here’s a sneak peak…
