This just about sums up my tardiness, and brings an end to the series.

self portrait number 8 in the studio

110 wedding invites to delicately piece together.  Prints to package and ship.  I’ve been right here…a lot…but no complaints.  It’s a happy place.

Self Portrait #7

if I were a material girl…a few of my favorite things.

Self Portrait No. 7 - Material Girl

1.  Gap jeans – my favorite pair.

2.  Great-Grandmother’s wedding band.  Oh how we miss her!

3.  Scarves.  This one, hand-painted in Belgium, a gift from some old friends.

4.  Flip-flops (my feet hate socks!)

5.  My Blushing Mona Lisa, a canvas print by dear friend Dana Jo.

6.  Paint brushes.  I don’t think I’ve ever thrown one out.  Too much story in them.

7.  Painting by Lee Anne. She offers the best kind of inspiration.

8.  Our wedding rings. (photo by Jade McCully)

9.  Hand-written recipe cards.

Self Portrait #6

Deepest apologies for missing a day in this series…got a little swamped in the studio…

self portrat no. 6 on scratchboard

Proportions are off.  Not sure if it’s the execution at 9am, the unforgiving nature of scratch-board, or the fact that it’s just plain hard to draw your own portrait.  Regardless, there is nothing more soothing to my soul than half an hour of cross hatching.

Self Portrait #4

May 30, 2010

Admittedly slack today, but it is a holiday weekend.

Time to let my hair down…

Self Portrait Number 3 Heather l Young

10 minute gesture (b/c I’m ready to hit up the pool)  w/a 2H pencil and some fun with watercolor pencils.  Fancy red mirror, which was questionably hung on the wall next to my drafting table, has officially served it’s purpose.

Self Portrait #2

May 28, 2010

It’s pretty common for me to sketch my left hand (usually out of boredom), but impossible for me to sketch my right unless I photograph it, which would just suck the fun right out of sketching it…I mean most artists would prefer to draw from life right?  Anyhoo…here they are.  Far from glamorous, bug bites on my wrists, lack of nails (a direct indication that I’ve been painting..a lot), and I’m entirely convinced that the curvature of my right pinky comes from so many years of tedious inks.

I’ll leave the rest to you palm readers out there…

Britt’s got me inspired…8 self-portraits in 8 days.  A tall order for someone who’s been pretty neglectful to the blog world lately, but a good excuse to find myself underneath the heap of work and daily stressers that have consumed me as of late….There’s no rules and regulations, any medium you wanna use, and if you wish to  jump on board and participate just leave a comment on Britt’s post, so we can all keep up with each other.

Medusa & Me

April 12, 2010

I have officially moved out of Granny’s…(some 10 years later)…it was quite the treasure hunt to find works from the early days.  The following painting is the first painting from my very first oil painting class…also, the first canvas I ever constructed and stretched…(that’s a lot of  “firsts”)

The assignment:  Paint a self-portrait with something “on your head”.  Never one to rock a hat, I went for this

Medusa Oil Painting Self Portrait

Medusa & Mea self-portrait (though people suggest it looks more like my mother)

Oil on Canvas

Now just tell me where in the world am I  supposed to put a large-scale self-portrait of myself with snakes all over me?! (you all know I hate snakes)  What was that teacher thinking with this assignment?  He hasn’t said so, but I think Nick’s scared of it.  So if anyone needs a rather large conversation piece, feel free to make an offer!

10 minutes for you…

October 20, 2008

I wish I had more time to share today…but the studio is a wreck, we’ve been hunting wedding locations, and the rest of my time has been poured into promo…100 postcards here, 100 postcards there, oh and meet & greet lunch with some local etsy sellers, and the folks from SMB…ouch…that took three minutes…The remaining 7 minutes have been allotted to you in the form of a scritchy scratchy self-portrait….nothing special…in fact I don’t really care for it at all…but just for you.

So my week has pretty much been turned over to doctors…nothing serious…(at least I hope not)…but some unexpected…and if you know me well, or have spent considerable time on this blog…you know that I am a meticulous planner…throwing me a whole week off course, is certain to cause some anxiety down the road. Alas…today will officially be my last day with this

per doctor’s orders. They leave me no choice but to bid farewell to this friend…(again)…let’s hope this time does the trick.

On a lighter note….and for you dahling Bekah…I applied the following to my blue linen skirt. Not bad (i don’t think) for my first attempt. I plan on embellishing my red linen with the yellow pattern in the previous post.
