Self Portrait #2

May 28, 2010

It’s pretty common for me to sketch my left hand (usually out of boredom), but impossible for me to sketch my right unless I photograph it, which would just suck the fun right out of sketching it…I mean most artists would prefer to draw from life right?  Anyhoo…here they are.  Far from glamorous, bug bites on my wrists, lack of nails (a direct indication that I’ve been painting..a lot), and I’m entirely convinced that the curvature of my right pinky comes from so many years of tedious inks.

I’ll leave the rest to you palm readers out there…

Proof…

…I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life in the 10th grade.

note to self - goals

From the back of an old sketchbook…long-lost and forgotten at Granny J’s house.  Judging my the wonky “Y” in my last name, I had yet to nail down my signature.

score!

Spent the greater part of last week in Florida, where upon, my brother finally returned a sketchbook that I had left in his truck several years ago.  It’s like catching up with a long-lost friend.  Here’s what I was drawing on 5-16-06.

A sleeping Vayda-monkey, that is.

new works…

are coming soon.  This may or may not make the line up.

Quite a rough sketch at this stage.

marks

May 4, 2009

Here, some prep for an ink. Is it not amazing how a drawing can be broken down into the simplest of marks?  I remember sick days from school watching this guy. He made painting trees seem so elementary.  I suppose if you don’t allow your brain to consider the subject matter, it could all be simple…(not just trees.)

I’m just sayin’.

a new series in the works.  Gotta have something fresh to test on the new beast.

doodle?

or character design?  Perhaps mindless drawing may be the most natural way to achieve  doodle evolution…I’m not quite sure, but I’ve enjoyed two full days of it….ahh January bliss!

deciphering doodles

Totally mindless doodles here…

If you believe the Diary:

Long Necks = I’m pretty conventional and moralistic…(some would agree)

Hard pressure applied with use of pen = indicates tension…(not too much of a stretch)

Bird (if you call that a bird) = “high flying” ideals, the wish to fly away, the ability to rise above earthly problems (he does kind of resemble an alien?)

Rabbits = represents speed and sexual immaturity?

Long Legs = say I’m self-reliant (I’ll take this one)

Large Eyes = I’m suspicious, hypersensitive, and occasionally hysterical.   hmmm….

I’ve concluded that all of this must be taken with a grain of salt, as the book provides no real definition for the common thread found here…antlers?

lost in translation

Some days my artistic vision gets muddled somewhere between my brain and my hand.  Last night, they spoke perfectly to each other.

10 minutes for you…

October 20, 2008

I wish I had more time to share today…but the studio is a wreck, we’ve been hunting wedding locations, and the rest of my time has been poured into promo…100 postcards here, 100 postcards there, oh and meet & greet lunch with some local etsy sellers, and the folks from SMB…ouch…that took three minutes…The remaining 7 minutes have been allotted to you in the form of a scritchy scratchy self-portrait….nothing special…in fact I don’t really care for it at all…but just for you.
