In addition to the loss of my beloved RockStar Reds and Eat Your Greens series, seems my printer will no longer be able to accommodate the 8×10 size either…eeek!

While I’ve enjoyed this journey from the Southern Girl’s Cookbook, to the Taste of the Month with Skirt!, and ultimately their last hoorah at The Produce Stand, I’m thinking it’s time to move in a new direction.  Time to get back to my painting roots, and come up with a new series to keep me up at night.

Fret not, my foodie loving friends… your collections just became a  little more exclusive!  These were produced in very limited editions, so if you’ve been pondering that Fish for Dinner, now’s the time to click click buy!

SuperSkirt that is!  When I picked up the Savannah edition of Skirt Mag, only these two had made the issue.  Which left me a little sad, as I’d never completed an illustration that didn’t “make the cut” so to speak.  And then I received the Charleston edition of Skirt in the mail yesterday…all three illos included!

Hope you all have a lovely Wednesday…and don’t forget to pick up the latest issue of Skirt! Mag….(it’s free AND in 22 cities) and if you’re local, be sure to check out this weekend’s Market Bazaar!!!!!!

Has anyone picked up the October issue of Skirt Magazine?…(they’ve spread their wings a bit since the last time I illustrated for them…so you might have this little gem in your neighborhood by now)  Anywho, I have a few illos in the current issue if you care to take a peek…and can I just say what an honor it is to be included in the “Wonder Woman” issue…I mean, Wonder Woman was like my hero back in the day…(and yes mom, I do remember my Wonder Woman birthday cake)

Also note, that while these illos have a political vibe attached to them, I refuse to turn this blog into a political forum…there are plenty of other outlets for that, and frankly, I think we’re all a little sick of the politics right now….but it’s always nice to see your work in print!

Can you believe it? I’ve been pluggin’ away at this whole blog world now for a good 365 days. I never dreamed when I started this little adventure, that people would actually find interest in the life of a quirky southern artist…let alone that it would introduce me to so many wonderful friends, artists, colleagues, interesting folks, and more. Within one month of starting this little blog, traffic had more than doubled to my website, and has yet to drop since!

I am incredibly grateful to all of you who have subscribed to this blog, shared your comments and well-wishes with me, posted links, and spread the word! It’s been an incredible journey, and the only way I see fit to thank you all…is to have a Blog-A-Versary Give-A-Way!!! I picked the following Foodie Print for two reasons:

1. I’m drinking it for breakfast…(much like Lee Lee used to do)

2. Lee Lee’s Sweet Tea was one of the original Southern Girl’s Cookbook illustrations, that landed me the gig with the fabulous Skirt! Magazine, and sparked my interest in Food Illustration. So there you have it…

it’s come full circle…

February 5, 2008

A few years ago, I…(along with dear friend Dana Jo)…concocted a promotional idea to get my foot in the door with some editorial outfits.  The goal was to create something that would be hard to throw away…something that could sit on someone’s desk for a while…and so began the Southern Girl’s Cookbook…(an interesting concept, as I cannot cook for the life of me….)  I spent an eternity (just ask my father) preparing the interior illustrations, compiling the recipes, and coming up with a crafty presentation.  I was warned (by Dad in particular) that the idea might not work on the first round, and to be patient….(not a real strong personality trait of mine…)  So you can imagine how surprised I must have been when Nikki called just 5 days after I mailed the first batch.  This of course, marked the beginning of the Taste of the Month for Skirt! Mag…a series that ran for nearly 19 months, having just ended in December of 2007.

Oddly enough, just around the death of the Taste of the Month, I received one of the original cookbooks in the mail.  The editor of Southern Lady Magazine, had apparently found it hard to throw away, and some two years later decided to mail it back to me…

Isn’t it funny how things come full circle?

updates…

January 3, 2008

I know…I know…I need to post some drawings/paintings/new work to this bloggity blog blog…however, since my trip to Florida for Christmas, I’ve been working on some serious website updates.  If you have a few moments visit FLYoung Studio and see the latest.  I’ve posted a slide show of the Southside Shellfish mural, a slew of Taste of the Month Illustrations, and the final pen & inks from the Christmas rush….(you mostly saw the pencil works via this blog, not the final inked versions….)  Anywho, I’m on the road again tomorrow…off to Atlanta for a few days, so I probably won’t post…but I’m not driving, so I hope to get some “sketch time” in while we ride along that boring interstate.
